High Press — overview

High Press

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

A high press is a football tactic where a team aggressively pushes its defensive line high up the pitch to win the ball back in the opponent's half, close to their goal.
Instead of sitting back, the team actively chases the ball in the opponent's territory, aiming to force mistakes and create quick scoring chances.
High Press — shape
Top teams use the high press to disrupt opponent build-up play, generate turnovers in dangerous areas, and reduce the distance to goal for immediate attacking opportunities.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

From a data perspective, teams employing a high press typically exhibit a low PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) value, indicating they allow fewer passes before making a defensive action. This tactic often correlates with higher numbers of high turnovers and shot-creating actions originating in the attacking third.

Scout Lens

A scout observes the coordinated movement and pressing triggers: how quickly players transition from attack to defense, the compactness of the unit, and the specific cues that initiate the press, such as a risky pass or a poor touch by an opponent. They also assess the intensity and synchronization of individual player efforts.

Liverpool (under Klopp), Manchester City (under Guardiola), Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig
Watch for a team's attackers and midfielders pushing far into the opponent's half, often swarming the player on the ball immediately after possession is lost.
