Player Roles

Wing-Back — overview

Wing-Back

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

A wing-back is a defender who operates wide on the flank, combining extensive defensive duties with significant attacking responsibilities, often utilized in formations with three central defenders.
They're essentially a full-back given more freedom to push forward and contribute to attacks, responsible for covering the entire length of their side of the pitch.
Wing-Back — shape
Top teams utilize wing-backs to provide critical attacking width, overload opposing flanks, and offer an additional creative outlet from deep, all while maintaining defensive solidity due to the presence of three central defenders.

Two Ways to See It

Scout Lens

From a scouting perspective, a wing-back requires exceptional stamina and work rate to consistently cover the entire flank, coupled with strong crossing ability and precise defensive positioning. Their ability to deliver quality service from wide areas and contribute to defensive transitions is paramount for success in this demanding role.

Player Lens

As a wing-back, your role demands constant decision-making about when to join the attack with overlaps or underlaps, and when to drop back and defend. It involves relentless sprinting, accurate delivery into the box, and the discipline to perform defensive clearances and tackles, often requiring superior physical conditioning.

Achraf Hakimi, Reece James, João Cancelo, Marcos Alonso
Watch for a wide player who consistently pushes very high up the pitch to join attacks and deliver crosses, yet rapidly tracks back to defend deep alongside a three-man central defense.
