Defensive Actions Per 90 — overview

Defensive Actions Per 90

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

Defensive Actions Per 90 (DA/90) is a statistical metric that measures the average number of tackles, interceptions, blocks, and clearances a player performs over a 90-minute match.
It's a way to see how often a player gets involved in stopping the opponent's attacks during an average game.
Defensive Actions Per 90 — shape
Top teams use DA/90 to identify players with high defensive work rates, evaluate their contribution within pressing schemes, or pinpoint key individuals who consistently regain possession.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

For analysts, a high DA/90 score typically indicates a player's significant defensive engagement and work rate, often correlating with their role in breaking up play or the team's overall defensive strategy. It provides a raw quantitative measure of defensive output.

Scout Lens

A scout looks beyond the raw number, assessing the quality and timing of each defensive action: Is the tackle clean and effective? Is the interception well-read and does it lead to possession? The impact and decision-making behind each action are crucial for a scout's evaluation.

N'Golo Kanté, Casemiro, Rodri, many defensive midfielders and full-backs
Watch for players who are constantly chasing, engaging opponents, winning the ball back, or getting in the way of shots and passes.

Possession is the World Cup stat to trust least

Spain held 81.8% possession and attempted 1,043 passes in a 7-0 win over Costa Rica, then attempted 1,115 passes against Russia and went out on penalties. Same team, same style, opposite results, because possession without the scoreline and shot quality beside it explains nothing.
