A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.
What Is It?
Expected Assists (xA) is an advanced metric that quantifies the likelihood of a pass becoming an assist, based on the quality of the chance it creates for the recipient. It evaluates a player's creativity and chance-creating ability independent of whether the resulting shot is scored.
In Simple Terms
xA tells you how good a scoring opportunity a pass *should* have created, regardless of whether the person receiving it actually scored or missed.

Why Top Teams Use It
Top teams utilize xA to identify truly elite playmakers and assess a player's consistent ability to unlock defenses, rather than just relying on actual assists which can be influenced by teammates' finishing ability. It helps in recruitment and evaluating attacking system effectiveness.
Two Ways to See It
Data Lens
xA is computed using statistical models that analyze hundreds of thousands of past passes, considering variables like pass type, location on the pitch, destination, number of defenders, and proximity to goal. A high xA value indicates a pass that consistently places a teammate in a strong shooting position with a high probability of being converted into a goal.
Scout Lens
A scout observing a player with high xA would recognize their exceptional vision, precise execution of passes into dangerous areas, and ability to consistently find pockets of space behind defensive lines. They create 'easy' chances for others, often leading to one-on-one situations or tap-ins, showcasing an innate understanding of offensive timing and angles.
Example Teams / Players
Kevin De Bruyne, Lionel Messi, Bruno Fernandes, Trent Alexander-Arnold
Spot It During a Match
Watch for passes that perfectly split defenders, thread through tight spaces, or create clear, high-probability scoring chances for a teammate, even if the resulting shot is missed or saved.
