What Is It?

Man marking is a defensive strategy where each defender is assigned to directly track and cover a specific attacking player, following them closely across the pitch.

Why Top Teams Use It

Top teams use man marking to disrupt key opposition attackers, prevent them from receiving the ball in dangerous areas, and isolate their individual threats. It creates direct accountability for defensive duties.

Two Ways to See It

Scout Lens

A scout evaluates a player's discipline, stamina, and agility to maintain tight coverage on an assigned opponent for 90 minutes, observing how well they anticipate movements and win individual duels away from traditional defensive zones. They note how effectively a defender can nullify a creative attacker by denying them space and time.

Data Lens

Data can quantify man marking effectiveness by tracking individual defensive actions against specific opponents, such as duels won, interceptions, and tackles made when directly engaged. Metrics might also highlight how an assigned defender's presence affects an attacker's touches in dangerous areas or their progressive passes received.
