npxG (Non-Penalty xG) — overview

npxG (Non-Penalty xG)

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

npxG (Non-Penalty Expected Goals) measures the expected goals a team or player would score based on the quality and location of their shots, specifically *excluding* penalty kicks.
It's like regular Expected Goals, but it only counts chances from open play or set pieces, not the spot-kick opportunities given for fouls in the box.
npxG (Non-Penalty xG) — shape
Top teams use npxG to accurately assess their genuine attacking threat and defensive solidity from open play, as it removes the impact of often-sporadic penalty awards from their performance metrics. This provides a clearer picture of a team's sustainable chance creation and prevention capabilities.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

npxG offers a more granular assessment of a team's attacking output and defensive concession by isolating repeatable processes of chance creation and prevention. A high npxG value indicates a team consistently generates quality non-penalty scoring opportunities, while a low npxG conceded suggests strong defensive structures against open play attacks.

Scout Lens

From a scouting perspective, a team with a high npxG looks dangerous and effective in open play, consistently finding pathways to goal and forcing saves from the keeper through their build-up. Conversely, a low npxG conceded team appears well-drilled defensively, limiting opponents to speculative shots and blocking dangerous avenues to goal without conceding fouls in the box.

Teams renowned for consistent open-play chance creation like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal
Watch for a team consistently creating high-quality scoring opportunities from open play, getting into dangerous areas without relying on penalties to boost their goal tally.
