PPDA — overview

PPDA

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) is an analytics metric that measures the average number of passes an opposing team completes in their own half and the middle third before a team makes a defensive action (tackles, interceptions, fouls, challenges).
This stat tells you how many passes an opponent makes before your team tries to win the ball back, indicating how intensely they press.
PPDA — shape
Top teams use PPDA to quantify the effectiveness of their pressing schemes, helping coaches understand if they are successfully disrupting opponent build-up play high up the pitch and forcing turnovers.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

A lower PPDA value signifies a more intense and effective pressing system, as the opposition completes fewer passes before facing a defensive action. Data analysts often track this statistic to evaluate a team's defensive structure and collective work rate without the ball, identifying trends in their tactical approach.

Scout Lens

From a scout's perspective, a team displaying a consistently low PPDA will appear suffocating on the pitch, constantly hounding opponents and forcing rushed decisions or turnovers. Scouts observe the coordinated movements, body language, and collective commitment to hunt the ball in advanced areas rather than dropping deep.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig
Watch for a team aggressively closing down space and players in the opponent's half, making it difficult for them to complete more than a few consecutive passes.
