Pressing Intensity — overview

Pressing Intensity

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

Pressing Intensity refers to the collective effort and aggressiveness a team applies to winning the ball back from an opponent.
It's all about how much a team bothers the opponent when they have the ball, trying to win it back quickly and disrupt their rhythm.
Pressing Intensity — shape
High pressing intensity can force opponents into errors, create turnovers in dangerous areas for quick attacks, and exhaust the opposition. It also dictates the tempo of the game and can prevent opponents from building comfortable attacking plays.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

From a data perspective, pressing intensity is quantified using metrics like PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) or High Turnovers. A lower PPDA typically indicates higher pressing intensity, as the team allows fewer passes before attempting to win the ball back, while High Turnovers track successful ball recoveries close to the opponent's goal.

Scout Lens

A scout observes pressing intensity by watching how quickly players react to turnovers and how coordinated their movements are to close down space. They look for triggers like a bad touch or backward pass that prompt immediate, aggressive collective pressure from multiple players to corner an opponent.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, Julian Nagelsmann's Bayern Munich
Watch for multiple players immediately swarming an opponent who has just received the ball, especially in their own half, to block passing lanes and force a mistake.
