Two Ways to See It
Data Lens
Progressive carries are tracked by measuring the distance a player moves the ball towards the opponent's goal, typically requiring a minimum forward distance (e.g., 5-10 yards) and excluding touches originating deep in their own half. This metric quantifies offensive ball progression and a player's direct impact on advancing play.
Scout Lens
A scout observes progressive carries as a player's initiative and technical ability to burst through congested areas, destabilizing the opponent's defensive structure. It highlights players who can instinctively recognize and exploit space, carrying the ball past opponents to create numerical advantages in dangerous zones.
