Shot-Creating Actions — overview

Shot-Creating Actions

A Ballify concept guide — learn what it is, then spot it live.

Shot-Creating Actions (SCA) are the two offensive actions directly preceding any shot, encompassing a variety of contributions like passes, dribbles, winning a foul, or other instances of direct involvement.
Think of it as the critical build-up actions, often the assist to the assist, that directly set up a teammate to take a shot.
Shot-Creating Actions — shape
Top teams use SCA to identify players who consistently contribute to offensive chances, even if they don't get the final assist, revealing crucial playmakers and how attacks are constructed. It highlights players driving offensive output and the effectiveness of different build-up patterns.

Two Ways to See It

Data Lens

Analysts track SCA volume and type (e.g., live-ball passes, dribbles, fouls won, defensive actions leading to a shot) to quantify a player's involvement in chance creation. High SCA numbers, especially combined with low actual assists, can reveal hidden playmakers and their specific contributions to attacking sequences.

Scout Lens

A scout observes players whose actions consistently open up space or provide dangerous opportunities for teammates, even if they don't get the assist. They look for intelligent movement, incisive passing, or effective dribbling that disrupts defenses and puts attackers in shooting positions, assessing the quality and impact of these chance-creating moments.

Watch for players making the pass before the assist, completing a key dribble into the box, or winning a free-kick in a dangerous area right before a shot is taken.
